The view of Marble Mountain from the Humber River in Newfoundland

The International Committee (IC) is very pleased to announce that the SCIJ 68th Winter meeting will occur in Marble Mountain, Newfoundland, in Canada from March 12 – 19th, 2023.

After dealing with the impacts of COVID and the fallout on the tourism industry in general, SCIJ Canada has pivoted plans to bring you its fourth winter meeting in a picturesque setting that is.

Where is Newfoundland

Newfoundland, affectionately known as ‘The Rock’, is the most Easterly province (53.1355° N, 57.6604° W) and was the last to join Canadian Confederation in 1949. Froth with rich history and culture, this is where the first European Viking settlement took place in 1,000 A.D..

Marble Mountain is located in the Western part of Newfoundland and is renowned for its abundant natural snow conditions (more than 500 cm) per season, warm hospitality, and culture. The setting is ideal for SCIJ to ramp up its Post-Covid activities and hopefully the post-war in Ukraine.

”More than ever this meeting will be marked by the essence of our club since its foundation; the solidarity that binds the profession no matter where they come from. The Marble Mountain ski resort in western Newfoundland and Labrador will be the ideal place for such a meeting. The wide-open spaces, the mountain that meets the sea, lend themselves to action and reflection,’’ says Ginette Lamarche, President of SCIJ Canada.

About the meeting

This meeting will be different, bringing us back to our roots, focusing not only on skiing but also on the winter playground and other outdoor sports, local culture, SCIJ think tanks and conferences. The invitation is for 120 journalists at a cost of between 350 – 400 Euros (excluding SCIJ individual meeting fees and members SCIJ Fees) per participant. The fee is expected to cover transfers, accommodations, meals and lift tickets. Pre-and-post tours will also be organized and announced at a later time.

An inspection will take place later this summer and we expect to be in a position to provide more adequate details on the program by late August / early September. We will also communicate new registration processes and how SCIJ plans to ramp up activities this summer. If you haven’t done so, please fill out the summer meeting survey as soon as possible.

We are ecstatic to finally make this announcement and we hope to see many familiar and new faces in Canada. We have no doubt this will be a unique experience for SCIJ. We wish a great deal of success to the SCIJ Canada Organizing Committee and their local partners for a smooth and successful preparation during these coming months!

More details will follow in the coming weeks!
